The Last Lament of Orpheus

Left alone by the love of our lives, to whom can we turn? Will we heal? Can we heal?

Writing praise of flowers and birds,
Before attachment, before departure,
Was well and dandy in days of lore,
Afore you left me needing more

I’d strum my lyre, sing carefree songs
And melt the hearts of hardened souls
Now filling lonely days apart
Feels a burdened mountainous curse
Days past, t’were eased
Afore I met thee
Gayly lost in reveries
Aft we met, left you, wept I
Care’s gone dry, cracked earth dust swept
All’s said, all’s done, dead my songs
My lyre’s strings split, cracked and gone

The wind may blow sweet phrases to you
From distances great and far,
The sun proffer a notion of
The coming night’s beauteous stars,
Rain may waft the fragrant bliss
Of Gaia's spring-borne lilac kiss,
But curse I those tidings marred
To hollowed, emptied, roiled and charred
Give no succor, no succor meet thee
Only mind of betrayed malady
That is my soul, aft departed thee
Scarred, despoiled, torn fractiously

Bitter this poem burns with desire
Unrequited, lit brushfire
Begs your return, sullied love conspires
For a moment quench
This unquenchable fire

Few moments more, entwine me love
Ensnare me, devour me in raptured deceit
For I know, deep, deep within me,
That come you may only to leave
I embrace yon torture
For a moment with thee
To bind me, thrash me, ravish me free

Cunning are Love’s hateful sensations
To lust for that which lights flagrations
Give Love no mind, ignore its call
Whisper wounds in seeping pall

I turn now back upon your back
Breathe deep and sorrowed rending breath
Release rent lyre from skeletal grasp
Reaching for end, letting go at last
Past caring for him, you left behind
Orpheus to Hades, Eurydice blind
Lambasted souls clutching claws
Drag me to depths of Mercy’s jaws
